The SMI and Us
Hey! Thanks for checking out our blog!
We've started this blog so that friends and family can keep up with our exciting summer adventure here in Philadelphia. Since this our first post here, I wanted to provide some information about what we'll be doing.
Dave has committed to working with Esperanza Health Center in Northeastern Philadelphia for two weeks this summer. The program is called the Summer Medical Institute. I will be joining the team for as much time as I can in between working. So, without further ado...
Esperanza Health Center is a community health center that serves the uninsured of North Philadelphia with holistic, bilingual, and bicultural care. They accept some insurances, but mostly assess fees based on their clients' income. You can read more about them at www.esperanzahealthcenter.org
The Summer Medical Institute started in 1992, as an opportunity for medical students to serve the residents of North Philadelphia and learn to integrate their faith and medicine. In 2002, the program moved to Texas, and has been operating there for the past 7 years. The program will continue there, as well as come back to the Philadelphia campus this year. Dave and I are very excited to be apart of this ministry, because it has been our passion and is our dream to one day operate a free or low-cost clinic. We are passionate about accessible healthcare, justice, and spreading the love of Jesus. We see this opportunity this summer as an excellent learning experience, as Esperanza is regarded as one of the best low-cost clinics in the country. We are sure this experience will be invaluable to us.
So, if you don't mind taking a minute, please pray for the preparations for this amazing opportunity. Pray that we would be able to raise the funds needed to allow this opportunity to take place. But more importantly, please pray for the hearts of those we will encounter, and for our hearts as well as the hearts of our fellow team members. We are excited to see how God will use this team!
